Pitch Reflection



Our group was tasked with advertising a bike share program in Abu Dhabi.  The main appeals that we focused on in our presentation was the appeal to nurture and the appeal to achieve. We concluded that these would be the most effective appeals to utilise because the appeal to achieve can help persuade the citizens of Abu Dhabi to achieve a better lifestyle, a fitter body and a more environmentally friendly Abu Dhabi. The appeal to nurture was also used to bring an awareness to the lifestyle of younger citizens and children. Obesity rates are quite high in UAE and using these statistics which appeals to logos, we tried to persuade guardians to help better the lifestyle of their kids. As mentioned previously logos was used to bring an awareness to obesity rates in the aim of persuading parents to better the lifestyle of their kids. We also tried to implement ethos with the use of a famous cyclist to promote our bikes, trying to appeal to credibility and persuade the audience that our bikes are adept. Pathos was notably the most dominant persuasive technique that we used. We believed this to be effective especially when appealing to nurture. Audience and context influenced our ideas greatly as we had a clear idea on who we were going to target and the relative knowledge of Abu Dhabi paired with additional research helped us to narrow down on our audience whilst maintaining flexibility on who this ad can be targeted towards. We used a picture of a family on bikes, having a good time to try and show that this would be an activity where you can enjoy with family/ friends as this place is quite family-orientated. We also had a picture of an overweight to discuss our statistics on obesity rates in Abu Dhabi and to further appeal to the need to nurture and to further express the importance of bettering a children’s lifestyle thus appealing to emotion. Our presentation was short and direct and believe that we presented our ideas effectively however it will be better if more information/ in depth analysis was present because it was too short. This activity has allowed me to know where I should work on in my FOA, especially in the areas of sufficient presentation length, longer/ richer analysis and stage presentation.

My interests include playing many different sports but my favourite sport is soccer. Language plays an important role in my life because my mother tongue is Tamil and often my parents talk to me in Tamil and since this is my mother tongue I feel that it is important to be able to speak it since it ties me more to my cultural heritage. How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers? The news article titled "For women under 30, most births occur outside of marriage" was an article which highlights the phenomenon of non-marital births and single parenting within the United States. In news media, the information communicated can vary between each individual depending on the context of a reader and their ideologies. In this article, textual bias is evident to demonstrate the author's negative notions towards single parenting and having children before or without marriage. This is evident through the author's choice of diction of words with negative connotations such as illegitimacy and normal being used in the same sentence to show frustration towards the topic.
