Single Parents and Non-Marital Births

How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers?

The news article titled "For women under 30, most births occur outside of marriage" was an article which highlights the phenomenon of non-marital births and single parenting within the United States. In news media, the information communicated can vary between each individual depending on the context of a reader and their ideologies. In this article, textual bias is evident to demonstrate the author's negative notions towards single parenting and having children before or without marriage. This is evident through the author's choice of diction of words with negative connotations such as illegitimacy and normal being used in the same sentence to show frustration towards the topic. An individual with a traditional ideology of having kids after marriage and opposed to the idea of single parenting would resonate with this text. On the contrary, individuals with a feminist ideology will read this text with a feminist approach and could feel empowered that single mothers are providing for the family without support. Additionally, despite the author's intent in voicing his frustration towards single parenting, the text is quite ambiguous as the information is more informative than opinionated which is intensified through the use of statistics and source control. This results in a piece which can be interpreted in various ways and it is influenced by how readers perceive and understand the text.

How and why is a social group presented in a particular way?

Single parents and non-marital births is becoming an increasing phenomenon within the United States. This news article titled "For women under 30, most births occur outside of marriage" is an article which presents the single parent social group in negative light. This is evident through the limited source control of using non-married mothers and discussing the challenges they face with financial security and lack of support in raising a child.  A social group can be presented in a negative way to shed light on another topic and develop an argument. This idea is evident in this article when the author states that children born to married couples are on average better educated and improved social, cognitive and behavioral outcomes. This could hint at possible pop cultural references of hip hop/rap artists indulging in harmful and provocative acts which seemingly influences children due to its popularity.

  1. I like the way you introduced and summarized what the text was in relation to the question proposed. The brief summary helps in understanding your stance in relation to the question in how context influences theme. To improve, I would change the vocabulary, more so the connective words and phrases between the sentences, as it kind of reads as a conclusion to an essay.
